Amazon keeps integrating AI into the buying experience, whether you like it or not. “Alexa for Shopping,” the company’s new customized AI shopping assistant powered by Alexa+, was unveiled on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the experience will take the place of its 2024-launched generative AI shopping assistant, Rufus. The business claims that Alexa for Shopping is intended to provide a voice- and touch-enabled shopping experience on desktop, mobile, and Echo Show smart displays. Alexa for Shopping is designed to offer more individualized recommendations and automate the shopping experience across Amazon and other online merchants, whereas Rufus concentrates on assisting users in finding and comparing products.

Alexa for Shopping is now accessible to consumers in the United States and can respond to questions like “What’s a good skincare routine for men?” to “When was the last time I ordered AA batteries?” When a user types a question into the main search bar or the specific Alexa for Shopping chat window, Alexa will respond with recommendations and answers that are specifically targeted to the user’s needs, including creating personalized shopping guides. In order to provide “that connected, personalized assistance to how you shop” and to become “more personal and more helpful over time,” the firm claims that the assistant learns about the habits, preferences, and past purchases of its clients.

In addition to responding to inquiries, Alexa for Shopping can check prices, compare products, and even set up recurring orders for necessities like paper towels or pet food. You can just tell Alexa, “Add this sunscreen to my cart if the price drops to $10,” to have items added to your cart automatically when they go on sale.

Beyond Amazon’s marketplace, the assistant can shop at other online retailers and use its “Buy for Me” option to purchase for you. This could be perceived as helpful, but it’s also a touch contentious given the growing concerns about AI autonomy and privacy.

The introduction of Alexa for Shopping follows the launch of Amazon’s 30-minute delivery service, “Amazon Now,” in numerous U.S. locations, as well as a new AI-powered feature that produces conversational audio responses to customer product inquiries in real time.
