Co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman voiced grave worries about Elon Musk’s ambition to govern artificial general intelligence (AGI) in recently disclosed emails from OpenAI’s early years, underscoring the conflicts that influenced the company’s turbulent start.
Dictatorship Issues with AGI
The correspondence reveals that OpenAI’s founders have long-standing worries about the possibility of a “AGI dictatorship”. A situation in which Elon Musk has “unilateral absolute control over the AGI” is a concern raised by Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. Like DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis, they were worried that Musk would turn into an AI tyrant as a result of this. These concerns draw attention to the moral conundrums and power struggles that exist in the early stages of OpenAI’s development.
The founders placed a strong emphasis on the necessity of designing a framework that would keep any one person from controlling AGI completely.

Musk’s Aspirations For Control

Musk founded his own AI company, xAI, in 2023 with the declared objective of creating “truth-seeking” AI that is consistent with human ideals because of this concern about centralized AI dominance. However, some contend that Musk’s strategy for developing AI, especially his emphasis on quick development and regulatory relaxation, may make powerful AI systems more dangerous rather than less.
