AI-powered dictation programs have become increasingly popular in recent years. Every week, new dictation apps are released in addition to well-known ones like Wispr Flow, Superwhisper, Willow, and Monologue. Hardware manufacturer Nothing introduced its own competitor offering, Essential Voice, on Thursday.

Essential Voice functions in any app to convert your speech into formatted text while eliminating filler words like “um” and “ah,” thus the basic principle is comparable to other dictation tools. Custom voice shortcuts for words, websites, templates, and repeated phrases can also be made, according to the business. For example, you can set your entire address to the shortcut “my address.”

The feature is currently accessible on the Phone (3), with support for the Phone (4a) coming next month and a rollout for the Phone (4a) Pro scheduled for later this month.

Users can either enable the feature from the keyboard or press the Essential key on devices that have it. The ability to link the iPhone’s action key to the app’s keyboard for dictation is comparable to what Superwhisper made available to iPhone users earlier this week.

Additionally, no new tool can translate text directly across languages. Nothing claimed the feature supported more than 100 languages at launch. In the future, it will also offer app-based custom styling, which will let you alter the tone of AI editing inside specific app categories, such as chat and work.

Nothing was among the first businesses to provide a system-level dictation integration. However, given Google’s recent release of its offline dictation software, it’s possible that other businesses will develop comparable products in the future.
