Account security is becoming a priority for OpenAI.

Advanced Account Security, a set of opt-in safeguards for ChatGPT customers intended for high-value persons but accessible to anyone who desires them, was introduced by the business on Thursday.

Digital security company Yubico revealed that it has teamed up with OpenAI to connect two new security-critical devices to ChatGPT accounts as part of that new initiative. According to the company, the relationship was created to shield consumers from phishing, which is thought to be a growing hazard for chatbot users.

Two “co-branded” YubiKeys, the YubiKey C NFC and the YubiKey C Nano, are being released by the two businesses.

According to OpenAI, those who work in politically sensitive and dangerous fields, such as political dissidents, journalists, researchers, and elected officials, would benefit greatly from AAS. For business customers, whose corporate secrets are hidden away in ChatGPT sessions, one would think that may make sense.

In a press release announcing the agreement, Yubico CEO Jerrod Chong stated, “Ultimately, we intend to drastically reduce the threat of unauthorized access to sensitive data in OpenAI accounts worldwide.”

Security keys are tiny hardware components that can be connected to digital accounts and activated via USB ports on a computer. Only the owner of the key can access a linked account since it has a unique cryptographic identity.

A rising body of research indicates that malicious actors are increasingly targeting chatbot users, despite the seemingly abstract nature of the threat posed by phished ChatGPT accounts. Cybercriminals are constantly searching for information that may be used for extortion, and since most chatbot discussions are private, there is no shortage of material for both personal and business users.

The AI sector is also starting to pay more attention to digital security. Anthropic unveiled the Mythos cybersecurity concept a few weeks ago. OpenAI has also made several announcements about digital security, possibly in an attempt to steal some of its rivals’ thunder. Following OpenAI’s statement on Thursday that it is introducing a new framework for digital defense, the Yubico alliance was announced.

Stronger protection is undoubtedly provided by a security-key-enabled account, but there is a drawback: OpenAI cannot assist in regaining access if the key is misplaced. In actuality, this could result in the permanent loss of discussions.
