Citing strain on its infrastructure, OpenAI has temporarily halted subscriptions for its $200-per-month Pro plan due to demand for its newest and most potent model, Astra.
Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, OpenAI’s product leader who oversees key products like Codex and ChatGPT at the AI lab, announced this on X. According to him, sign-ups for this service tier are currently being disabled because the Pro plan places the greatest burden on its servers.
Sottiaux added, “We wanted to take the smallest step that allows us to continue giving the broadest access possible.” The company’s other options, such as the API and the less expensive Go and Pro plans, are still accessible, he continued.
On Wednesday, the business issued a warning that such a move might occur. “Demand for Astra is really unprecedented,” Sottiaux remarked at the time. We’re using every resource at our disposal to maintain the demand, but we’ve previously experienced really rapid growth, and I haven’t seen anything like it till now. Maintaining top-notch service for current customers will always come first, but if this keeps up, we may need to temporarily halt new Pro memberships.
To offer a notion of the size of the demand, OpenAI has not disclosed how long sign-ups to the Pro tier may be blocked or how many individuals join up each day.
As recently as last month, the business increased usage restrictions for Codex users, indicating that the strain is a recent occurrence.
In addition to its AI, Astra has been expanding throughout OpenAI’s plans, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, and Business accounts, since its September 3 launch. The concept offers a significant advancement in highly competitive fields including computer use, coding, and AI reasoning. Demand was further stoked when OpenAI declared Astra to be a generational leap and the start of the “AGI era.”
