There is still a lack of insightful viewpoints on the marketing implications of the deluge of news items and startup launches in the AI field, but you would have to have been on Mars to avoid it. For many years, technology has evolved into a human extension, beginning with the personal computer and continuing with the internet and smartphones. Since artificial intelligence (AI) is a new form of intellect with potentially infinite applications, it is not only behavioral, but rather symbolizes a more fundamental and seismic shift.
Although technology and marketing have been headed for conflict for more than 20 years, we have never witnessed such a clear example of how technology can boost the inventiveness and originality of brand creatives and performance marketers. Though anything that can be automated will be mechanized, artificial intelligence (AI) is more than just automation; it’s also about innovation, inspiration, and optimization. Instead than letting IT handle the discussion and plan, the CMO must take the lead since AI will help humans do better marketing, not “more marketing.”
The role of AI (and technology in general) in marketing strategy and execution cannot and should not be delegated by CMOs. Instead of delegating to their IT team and performance marketers, CMOs should at the very least be aware of the distinctions between ChatGPT, Gemini, and Co-Pilot and be able to ask the appropriate questions. Marketing is one of the fields where actual use cases are beginning to appear, and they are not limited to automation and manufacturing.
Today’s marketers should embrace Gen AI for these five macro use cases:
- Automating the examination of millions of research data points to get more rapid insights into customer issues and business expansion prospects
- Combining data attributes from many systems and using generative AI to automatically categorize and find chances for personalization
- Automating customer support correspondence to free up more time for strategic development and customer experience-related tasks
- Using AI to provide a wider range of ideas to support a communications plan and using frameworks to prioritize
- Speeding up the creation of a more extensive, dynamic collection of creative elements, including text, images, and videos, that are localized and customized
Additionally, in order to guarantee that AI creates value, all CMOs and marketing teams must embrace these six fundamental principles:
- Make sure the consumer is at the center of every generation AI plan.
- Develop your own gen AI strategy internally as opposed to contracting with a tech company or provider.
- By embracing a variety of use cases that span CX, data, and content, show that marketing is at the vanguard of gen AI.
- Create an iterative, test-and-learn methodology that enables the simultaneous execution and evaluation of several experiments.
- Make sure that marketing is held accountable for finding and investigating cutting-edge AI technologies and software.
- Because AI appreciates clarity and depth, document and specify the operational model, procedures, user journeys, use cases, and guidelines.
At the board table, the CMO can act as a catalyst to find real value creation that produces expansion, increased efficacy, and increased efficiency. It would be a basic misunderstanding of AI’s broader applications to enhance data and creative talent to view it only as the latter. Given how quickly AI is developing, it is possible that a one-quarter delay in experimentation could result in a loss of revenue and competitive advantage.
