Organizations are using AI more and more to support a variety of business functions in today’s competitive labor market and hybrid work environment. These functions range from providing more individualized experiences to enhancing operations and productivity to assisting organizations in making better decisions more quickly. Because of this, IDC projects that the global market for AI hardware, software, and services will grow to be worth more than $500 billion by 2024.

However, many businesses shouldn’t, and aren’t, prepared to have their AI systems function fully autonomously without human input.

Because AI technologies are so complicated, businesses frequently lack the necessary knowledge of the systems they employ. In other cases, enterprise software incorporates basic AI. They take away control over the parameters of the data that the majority of enterprises want and can be very stagnant. However, to minimize dangers and maximize the advantages of AI, even the most astute businesses still include people in the process.

AI Safety Measures

There are good reasons to involve humans in the process, including ethical, legal, and reputational ones. Over time, inaccurate data may be introduced, which may result in bad decisions or, in extreme cases, dire conditions. Additionally, biases may be introduced into the system during the AI model’s training process, as a consequence of modifications made to the training environment, or as a result of trending bias, which occurs when the AI system responds more strongly to recent behaviors than to ones from the past. Consider the healthcare industry. The sector is a prime example of how AI and people can collaborate to achieve better results or seriously damage outcomes when people are not fully included in the decision-making process. AI is perfect, for instance, when diagnosing a patient or suggesting a course of treatment. The doctor then assesses the recommendation and provides the patient with advice based on its soundness.

In addition to preventing errors that can cause harm or disaster, having a way for people to continuously evaluate AI answers and accuracy will allow for ongoing model training, making the systems even. For this reason, IDC predicts that by 2022, over 70% of G2000 organizations will have formal systems in place to track their digital trustworthiness.
