A large language model (LLM) like OpenAI’s GPT4 or Google PaLM has an AI illusion when it makes up facts or information that aren’t based on real data or events.

The VP Analyst at Gartner, Avivah Litan, explains:

The outputs of large language models are hallucinations, which are totally made up. But the LLM output shows them with confidence and authority, even though they are made up facts.

If you give generative AI-driven chatbots facts, they can make up anything, from names, dates, and past events to quotes or even code.

According to OpenAI, hallucinations are so common that ChatGPT users are warned that “ChatGPT may produce inaccurate information about people, places, or facts.”

Users have to work hard to figure out what information is real and what isn’t.

Thoughts On AI Hallucinations

Several examples of AI hallucinations have been found recently, but one of the most famous was in a promotional movie that Google released in February 2023. Then, its AI robot Bard said that the James Webb Space Telescope had taken the first picture of a planet outside of our solar system, which was not true.

Also, during the launch demo of Microsoft Bing AI in February 2023, Bing looked at a Gap earnings statement and gave a wrong summary of the facts and numbers.

Customers can’t always rely on chatbots to give them honest answers, as shown by these cases. It’s not just sharing false information that AI hallucinations can cause, though.

Vulcan Cyber’s research team says that ChatGPT can create URLs, references, and code libraries that don’t exist, and it can even suggest possibly harmful software to users who don’t know any better.

This means that companies and people who want to try out LLMs and generative AI need to be careful and double-check the results to make sure they are correct.

What Makes AI Have Hallucinations?

Some of the main things that cause AI to have dreams are

1. Outdated or bad training data; data that has been wrongly named or classified;

Using a search engine to compare facts, figures, and arguments from news sites, business reports, studies, and books can help you figure out if something is true or not.
